The reading from Paul speaks of the kenosis, the self-emptying of Christ. When we look at the cross, we see the outstretched arms that embrace all our faults, we see the dripping blood that bathes us from our sins and washes us white as snow. Yet today, it has become a symbol of triumph and an emblem of glory. It was the bitter bed for thieves and slaves and criminals.
